Classical Greek is widely considered the most rigorous linguistic challenge at A-Level. The transition from GCSE is steep; students can no longer rely on memorised set texts for translation. They are now expected to tackle complex "unseen" passages of authentic prose and verse, requiring a deep grasp of syntax and a vast vocabulary.
Many students struggle to bridge the gap between reciting grammar tables and actually understanding the nuanced sentence structures used by ancient authors.
Our tuition focuses on linguistic stamina and literary sensitivity.
We teach students how to deconstruct complex periods and analyse the stylistic choices of the authors, ensuring that they can produce accurate, sensitive translations and insightful literary criticism under exam conditions.

Almost all candidates sit the OCR specification, which is divided into language and literature components.
We match students with tutors who are experts in the specific texts and skills required.
Unseen Translation (Paper 1): We provide a structured approach to the unseen translation paper, focusing on the common syntactical patterns of Xenophon and Thucydides so that students are not thrown by unfamiliar sentence structures on the day.
Prose Composition (Paper 2): For students choosing the composition option, we focus on the rigorous mechanics of translating English into Greek. We drill the principal parts and complex constructions to ensure that students can convert English sentences into accurate Greek without grammatical error.
Prose Literature (Paper 3): Whether studying Plato, Thucydides, or Herodotus, we focus on the specific historical and philosophical context. We ensure that students understand the arguments and rhetorical techniques used by the author to score high marks on the analysis questions.
Verse Literature (Paper 4): We guide students through the complexities of Homeric or Tragical dialect. We teach the rules of scansion and metre (such as iambic trimeter) so that students can comment technically on the rhythm and sound of the poetry, rather than just the meaning.

"The independent school fee increases due to the new VAT rules meant that had to change our daughter's school for her final year. We put some of the savings towards A-Level tuition for her to ensure she gets the attention she needs, and now she's scoring even better than she was at her old school!"
