History of Art requires a fundamental shift in how students look at the world. It is not enough to describe what a painting depicts; students must analyse how it communicates meaning through composition, colour, and line.
The challenge lies in balancing this "formal analysis" with deep historical context, explaining how patronage, politics, and theology influenced the production of the work.

We teach students the precise vocabulary needed to deconstruct architecture, sculpture, and painting, ensuring they can argue why a work looks the way it does rather than just reciting a textbook description.

As Edexcel is the sole provider, we match students with tutors who are specialists in the distinct demands of its two papers.
Paper 1 (Visual Analysis and Themes): We drill the skills of analysing unseen images, ensuring students can comment technically on 2D, 3D, and architectural forms. We also structure the "Themes" essays (such as Nature, War, or Identity) to ensure sustained comparison between different eras.
Paper 2 (Periods): Whether studying the Italian Renaissance or Modernism in Europe, we focus on the "named works" required by the board. We ensure students can link these key examples to the broader socio-political context to answer the specific questions on patronage and style.
Critical Texts: A-Level History of Art now requires engagement with secondary literature. We teach students how to integrate quotes from art historians into their arguments to demonstrate the critical understanding required for top bands.
