The IB Music course encourages students to engage with music from a wide range of cultures and time periods. You will develop your skills as a researcher, creator, and performer, exploring how music is constructed and how it functions in different societies.
At Avalon Education, our tutors help you move beyond being a performer. Our support focuses on the analytical and compositional skills needed to achieve a Grade 7.
Our approach centres on helping you identify the elements of music, such as melody, harmony, and texture, across different genres. Tutors guide you through the process of composing your own works and refining your performance technique, ensuring your musical choices are always informed by theory.
Since the course is assessed through a diverse portfolio, our sessions are tailored to help you document your musical journey. We provide the tools to articulate your creative decisions clearly, ensuring you are fully prepared for each component of the IB assessment.

Exploring Music in Context: You will research a variety of musical traditions and create a portfolio of written and practical exercises. We help you select diverse examples and explain their cultural and historical significance.
Experimenting with Music: This component involves creating and performing music in different styles. We help you develop your creative ideas and document your experiments in a formal process report.
Presenting Music: You will perform a selection of pieces and submit your final compositions. We help you refine your technique and polish your recordings to ensure they meet professional standards.
The Contemporary Music Maker (HL only): HL students collaborate on a project that explores music in a real world context. Our tutors help you plan your project and produce a video that documents the entire creative process.
