Develop the skills to decode both literary texts and non-literary media, from global advertising to classic prose.

£105/hour

The IB English A: Language and Literature course explores how language is used to shape meaning in the world around us. Unlike the pure Literature course, this subject combines the study of literary works with a wide range of non-literary texts, including advertisements, news media, and digital content.

At Avalon Education, our tutors help you navigate this diverse syllabus. We teach you how to apply rigorous critical thinking to any text type, helping you secure the high marks needed for a Grade 7.

We focus on teaching you the specific techniques needed to analyse how creators use language and image to influence their audience. Our tutors help you master the comparative and analytical skills that allow you to move comfortably between different genres and formats.

Because the course covers such a broad range of materials, our sessions are tailored to the specific texts and media types your school has chosen. We provide you with the analytical frameworks to handle both seen and unseen content, ensuring you are fully prepared for each component of the IB assessment.

The Individual Oral (IO): The IO is a formal talk where you examine how a Global Issue is presented in both a literary work and a non-literary body of work. We help you choose a cohesive theme, select the best evidence, and refine your delivery for the final recording.

Paper 1 & Paper 2: These exams test your ability to analyse unseen non-literary texts and write a comparative essay on the literary works you have studied. We use mock papers and specific feedback to help you manage your time and structure your arguments effectively.

The HL Essay: Higher Level students complete a formal 1,200 to 1,500 word essay on a non-literary body of work or a literary text. Our tutors help you choose a unique topic and build a sophisticated academic argument that demonstrates deep independent research.
