The IB Social and Cultural Anthropology course explores what it means to be human by looking at the different ways people organise their lives. You will study key themes such as identity, belief systems, and social change while learning to appreciate the value of cultural relativism.
At Avalon Education, our tutors help you move past descriptive accounts of other cultures. Our support focuses on the application of anthropological theories to ethnographic data, which is essential for a Grade 7.
We focus on developing your ability to compare different societies and understand the theories that explain their structures. Tutors guide you through the process of analysing ethnographic texts and films, ensuring you can identify the underlying social patterns.
Because the course involves deep reading, our sessions are tailored to help you master the key ethnographies chosen by your school. We provide the frameworks needed to write sophisticated comparative essays, ensuring you are fully prepared for each component of the IB assessment.

Paper 1: This is a stimulus based paper where you analyse an unseen ethnographic extract. We help you apply your knowledge of anthropological concepts and theories to the text provided.
Paper 2: This exam consists of questions based on your study of specific ethnographic areas and topics. We teach you how to write structured essays that compare different cultures and theoretical perspectives.
Internal Assessment (IA): Both SL and HL students complete an individual fieldwork project. Our tutors act as mentors to help you design your observation, collect data, and write a reflective ethnographic report.
HL Extension (HL only): HL students undertake a deeper theoretical study of an additional topic. We help you master the complex theories required for this extended part of the syllabus.
